AASHTO, its member organizations, committees and councils are continuing to move forward with the Safety Action Plan developed last fall. Throughout the organization, AASHTO committees are advancing safety in their respective transportation disciplines. For example:

  • The Committee on Design is publishing a new Bike Guide and launching technical training.
  • The Committee on Traffic Engineering is reconfiguring its Pedestrian Task Force as a Vulnerable Road Users Task Force to address issues for all users.
  • The Committee on Transportation System Operations is establishing a new Traffic Incident Management Community of Practice to reduce secondary crashes and improve safety for emergency management and DOT personnel on scene.

AASHTO is planning a second Safety Summit this fall, Oct. 15-17, 2024, to continue the work of integrating safety across the project lifecycle and throughout departments of transportation. The Summit will be held in Houston, hosted by the Texas Department of Transportation. Details will be announced soon.
